Vacuum bagging

Vacuum bagging

Soul Surfer applies vacuum bagging to its composites to be able to use the atmospheric pressure as a huge "clamp" to compress the basaltfiber and paulownia plates together. The bio epoxy lay-up is under vacuum pressure whilst it cures.

Key Benefits:

  1. Higher strength to weight ratio: It squeezes out excess resin, ensuring the part is not heavier than it needs to be.

  2. Removes voids: The pressure forces out trapped air bubbles that would otherwise weaken the structure.

Paulownia

The Soul Surfer boards are constructed with sustainability in mind. The Fish Cores ribs, the stringer, bottom and deck is manufactured using Paulownia wood from Ipaulownia in Valencia, Spain.

The company is known for its regenerative harvesting, the tree re-grows from its existing stump after being harvested. This eliminates the need for replanting and allows for continues production cycles for up to 100 years.

IPaulownia wood is highly valued for its expetional strength to weight ratio, being one of the lightest hardwoods in the world.
